St. Jakob, on the border between Baselland and Basel-Stadt, is an area of many contradictions. A wide range of transport infrastructures, generous leisure and sports facilities and major events all create dynamic currents in the area.
Research, knowledge production and communication can benefit from this area of tension. The creation of a new tram stop and an open ground floor will harness these dynamics. The creation of a transport hub and a public space is the key to a high level of exchange, which is central to the redesign of the laboratory programme, as research is most successful in an interactive environment. Modular co-working labs are flexibly arranged and complemented by fluid work and learning areas. Like a park in a city, the building is a facility that offers programmatic flexibility and diversity. As a landscape where spaces of exchange expand and contract, research unfolds in a topography of interactions.

The battery-powered motor oscillates at a defined and stable frequency, bringing the metal frame into movement. However, over time, the frame begins to accelerate and its movement overtakes the power of the motor.
Analogous to communication systems, input – output, transmitter – receiver, the two systems of movement, are constantly influencing one other.

Uetikon Am See – Kindergarten

Während der Dorfkern von Uetikon am See entgegen seinem Namen auf einem Plateau oberhalb eines Steilhangs zum Zürichsee liegt, nimmt das Fabrikareal drei Viertel des Seeufers der Gemeinde ein. Der Zugang zum See für die Öffentlichkeit ist somit auf einen kleinen Teil beschränkt. Nach der offiziellen Schliessung des Chemiewerks im Jahr 2017 steht der Gemeinde nun ein grosser Entwicklungsschritt bevor. Ein gross angelegter Planungsprozess sieht die Ansiedlung einer Kantonsschule für 1500 Gymnasiasten, eines Wohnquartiers und eines Mischnutzungsquartiers vor. Diese verschiedenen Bereiche sind über einen Seepark mit dem heutigen Hafen verbunden. In diesem schmalen, langgestreckten Parkstreifen besteht ein Konflikt zwischen der Erhaltung der Bausubstanz, die den Charakter des Ortes wesentlich prägt, und dem berechtigten Anliegen der Bevölkerung, das Gebiet zum See hin zu öffnen.

Aula, Bibliothek und Museum, Tanz, Musik und Theater, eine Kantine, Kindergarten und ein Ruderclub sowie Räume für Freizeit und Spiel sind die Angebote, für die ein adäquater Raum geschaffen werden muss.

Not an Atelierhaus. (2)
But a house that comes with a separate atelier – allowing the flexibility to live and work separately. New possibilities are opening up, such as collective workshops in the backyard, which reinforce the newly created residential neighbourhood into a collage city.
