I Dwell in the Space Between Your Wor(l)ds
2024

At a time when Vietnam was divided into a communist north and a US-backed south, and Germany was divided between capitalist West Germany and communist East Germany, links were established between the GDR and North Vietnam because of their common political orientation. A few years after the Vietnam War, an agreement was signed in 1980 to send Vietnamese to the GDR as temporary workers.
With the fall of the Berlin Wall, this agreement collapsed. While most Gastarbeiter had to return, some managed to settle down by becoming self-employed, including my parents. With the money they earned, they bought a piece of land and built a house in 1988 with the intention of settling in Vietnam, but after some back and forth, they decided to return to Germany and stay. Knowing that they had made an investment in buying land and its value, they continued to invest in more land back home, of which there are now only 2 left.

As a potential heir to the land with an existing house, questions of identity, dreams, values and agency arose.
